Zoo owner: April the giraffe's baby is 'very independent'

As Animal Adventure Park, the upstate NY zoo where April and her calf are at the house said from the beginning they would host a vote to determine the calf's name.

The Harpursville, New York, zoo has opened a baby-naming contest on their website after the calf's Saturday, April 15, birth.

Seconds after birth, April tenderly licked her calf, which began to slowly pick his head up from the floor of the pen. About 45 minutes after it was born, the calf stood on its wobbly legs while mom helped keep her baby steady.

According to CNN, at the time of the birth, 1.25 million people were watching Animal Adventure Park's giraffe cam. The calf's father, Oliver, who watched the birth from an adjacent pen, is a first-time father at the age of 5.

It finally happened. After 16 months, April the giraffe finally delivered her fourth calf at Animal Adventure Park. The zoo began streaming from April's enclosure in February. It is now closed but fans of April and her new baby will be able to visit when the park re-opens in mid-May.

Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch said the baby was healthy and April was recovering "perfectly".
