Cinco De Mayo Celebrations


Today is Cinco de Mayo, one of the most widely celebrated Mexican holidays in the United States.

This year, Cinco de Mayo celebrations were different from those held in previous years, because they were not held in The White House - in the gardens or in East Room in past years - but rather in a totally separate building.

Behind all the fun is the meaning of the day: Mexico's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Enthusiasm for Cinco de Mayo as a holiday only took off with a broader demographic when it began to be associated with the promotion of Mexican alcoholic beverages.
