Qantas chief Alan Joyce gets pie in face at Perth business breakfast

A man has shoved a large cream pie into Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce's face, during a business breakfast on Tuesday in Australia.

Video captured the moment a man calmly walks up behind Joyce before slamming the pie - thought to be lemon meringue - into his face, leaving Joyce and the audience shocked.

There were gasps among the crowd when the incident occurred shortly after 8am at the Leadership Matters breakfast hosted by The West Australian newspaper.

He then calmly walked off the stage and was quickly grabbed by security, but the reasoning behind the attack was unclear.

Mr Joyce will today announce plans for Qantas' new global wing at Perth Airport for its non-stop service to London.

He came back to a warm reception and asked the crowd "If there are any more pies, can you get it over with?"

Witnesses say Joyce left the stage nearly immediately, but soon returned without his jacket and his face wiped cleaned.

However, Joyce maintained his composure, reportedly saying "I don't know what that was about", before stepping off stage momentarily to clean himself.

Police confirmed they had been "called to a hotel on Adelaide Terrace, East Perth in relation to an assault incident".

And that they now had one person in custody.

"It was a very freakish appeared to be a lemon meringue pie", he said on Radio 6PR.
