North Korea accuses United States of assassination plot against Kim Jong Un

The sanctions still need to be approved by the Senate before being sent to Trump to sign into law.

The ministry said the "intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the USA imperialists and the puppet clique", referring to the South, would be swept away.

The ministry's statement was carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

That citizen, identified only as Kim, was allegedly working in Russian Federation in the timber industry.

The leader would have been targeted at a military parade and public procession, it said.

It added that the Central Intelligence Agency had chosen to use "biochemical substances" for the assassination and described the alleged plot as tantamount to "the declaration of a war".

Pyongyang said it has "exposed the criminal who had infiltrated our interior, with the intention of carrying out terrorism, using a biochemical substance against our supreme leader". The North Korean regime has a history of fabulist, unfounded claims, and is known for decrying global provocation on its own terms.

With the situation tense on the Korean Peninsula, all sides need to exercise restraint and not irritate each other to avoid the situation worsening, he said.

The alleged plan to use a biochemical agent on a member of North Korea's ruling family resembles the assassination earlier this year of Kim Jong Un's exiled half brother at a Malaysian airport.
