Armed inmate involved in hostage situation at Illinois hospital

A prison inmate, who was being treated at an IL hospital, is dead after he managed to gain control of an officer's weapon and hold a nurse hostage on Saturday, according to officials. A female nurse who was taken hostage survived, police said, and was with family Saturday evening.

"Hostage negotiators and the SWAT team were called in and they began a active negotiation with him", Gengler said after the situation was resolved.

The standoff had been contained to one section of the emergency room as of late afternoon, Gengler said. ".we are confined to the 3nd floor".

The hostage's sister told NBC 5 that her sister had emerged from the situation uninjured.

Lt Gengler said there have been no reports of injuries. "We were able to move patients out of the ER".

A medical employee exiting the building declined to discuss what was going on inside other than to say, "It's not good". Patients were safe and secure during the incident, a hospital official said. The main hospital was put on lockdown and all operations were normal, except no visitors were allowed. "All of our patients are continuing to be cared for we just ask that no one visit at this time".
