Democrats accuse the Republican president of trying to dent the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe by firing Comey and have called for a special counsel to investigate the Russian Federation issue.

President Donald Trump has become distrustful of some of his White House staff, heavily reliant on a handful of family members and long-time aides, and furious that the White House's attempts to quell the firestorm over the FBI and congressional Russian Federation investigations only seem to add more fuel.

"The first thing I asked is whether he realized that, if he does have tapes of his conversations with Comey, they're evidence in any investigation of whether his firing of Comey amount to obstruction of justice", Hughes said during an interview with the Times.

He was also set to welcome foreign leaders to the White House, with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday and President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia on Thursday.

Less than a week after former F.B.I. director James Comey was unceremoniously axed, Donald Trump remains his own worst enemy, simultaneously declaring Comey's ouster an open-and-shut case even as he throws gasoline on the firestorm he created. "This morning, the President tweeted a thinly veiled threat to Mr. Comey, which could be construed as threatening a witness in this investigation, which is another violation of federal law". Others close to Comey told reporters Trump used a dinner meeting to demand Comey's loyalty. "There's no time to do it", Trump said.

Trump confidants say Mr Bannon has been marginalised on major decisions, including Mr Comey's firing, after clashing with Jared Kushner. "You can't be cute about tapes", he told NBC. On Tuesday, the White House's official explanation was that Trump had acted based on the recommendation of deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and attorney general Jeff Sessions.

The president told Lester Holt on Thursday that he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of what top Justice Department officials had to say about the decision. By week's end, he was musing about cutting back on the White House's televised press briefings. Trump has openly vented his frustration with the media and Democrats on Twitter, musing about canceling press briefings and arguing that it's hard for aides to know his thinking.

Game 7 will also - at least for now - settle the score between teams that haven't hidden their dislike for one another. Beal was 0 for 7 on 3s before making his only one of the game with 69 seconds left. "It's not a Game 7".

He also cast doubt on White House claims that Mr Comey had lost the confidence of his staff.

"I would note that NY is a one-party consent state, and President Trump has always abided by the law", said Sam Nunberg, a former campaign aide.

"If there are no tapes, he should apologize to Jim Comey and the American people for misleading them", he added, suggesting that senior Democratic senators might attempt to refuse to confirm a new F.B.I. director until a special prosecutor is named. In a memo to Sessions, Rosenstein criticised Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was Secretary of State.

Initial contenders for the job, according to a person familiar with the matter, included Cornyn, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Justice Department official Alice Fisher, and Michael Garcia, a former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan.

Trump is considering almost a dozen candidates to succeed Comey.

Trump defended his surrogates in the interview with Fox News, calling Spicer a "wonderful human being" and deputy spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders a "lovely young woman". Moscow has denied any such meddling. That could ostensibly include Comey if he agrees to testify to Congress about the Russian Federation investigation.

When the White House's defence of the move failed to meet his ever-changing expectations, Mr Trump tried to take over himself.
