The new president's wife Brigitte, a 64-year-old who was his high school drama teacher, arrived separately for the ceremony wearing a light blue Louis Vuitton outfit.

"I am counting a lot on President Tusk and his leadership to go further in this overhaul".

The fervently pro-European Macron also said he would help rebuild the flagging European Union.

Macron is counting on winning votes from centre-right supporters in the legislative elections next month.

"The main objective of this provisional government is to blur the lines and confuse the French people in the parliamentary election campaign", Republicans secretary-general Bernard Accoyer said in a statement, adding that those who joined the government no longer belonged to the party.

Le Drian vowed to promote the country's "key role" in the worldwide community, noting continuity between his previous position and his new diplomatic job.

Le Drian says he expects France to play a crucial role in a "complex, fragile, unstable global situation".

She said: "I will of course discuss this with him, and I will say (we are) open to getting something done together".

Other appointments included Francois Bayrou, the head of the centrist Modem party, as justice minister and Marielle de Sarnez as junior Europe minister.

The messages were directed at members of his once-powerful Socialist Party, which is now on the verge of a collapse. The 48-year-old served as agriculture minister from 2009 to 2012 under former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

To deal with waves of migration and the threat of foreign extremists, Macron wants 5,000 new guards deployed on the outer borders of Europe's Schengen passport-free travel zone.

She also worked as a political adviser to Italian politician Romano Prodi when he was president of the European Commission from 2001 to 2004.

The 52-year-old German-speaker is a prominent pro-Europe politician and was elected a member of the European parliament in 2009.

Gerard Collomb, the mayor of Lyon and a longtime Macron backer, was named interior minister and No. 2 in the government after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

It was initially supposed to be unveiled on Tuesday, but his office explained that the delay will ensure that all future ministers had been thoroughly vetted and there were no conflicts of interest.

Macron has pledged to fight corruption after tax evasion and other scandals hit the previous government.
