Haley Urges Nations to Unite Against North Korea Nuclear Ambitions

United States ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called on the worldwide community to support the Trump administration's efforts in the region.

North Korea has made no secret of the fact that it is working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the USA mainland and has ignored calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programs, even from China, its lone major ally.

Given the trajectory of the missile and the angle at which it was launched, experts suggested that such a missile would be capable of hitting the US territory of Guam.

Flanked by ambassadors from Japan and South Korea, Haley reiterated the US position that it is willing to engage in talks with Kim's regime if it abandons its nuclear aspirations.

"The most important issue, of course, is enhancing the countries' understanding of the Korea-U.S. alliance and their joints efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue", the former ambassador to the U.S. told reporters, shortly before his departure from Seoul's Incheon airport.

Ambassadors from France and the United Kingdom have said they favor tougher sanctions against Pyongyang but a consensus hasn't been reached in the 15-member Security Council.

The U.S. and Pyongyang's ally China have been in talks on possible measures in response to the North's provocations, Haley said.

"Absolutely, sanctions (are) something that we are looking at and we are going to continue to see where that takes us".

The missile was sacked from the region of Kusong, northwest of Pyongyang, where the North in February successfully test-launched an intermediate-range missile that it is believed to be developing.

On the respected 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said it appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could "reliably strike the USA base at Guam" in the Pacific, 3,400 kilometres away.

"We need to return to dialogue with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, stop intimidating it and find ways to solve these problems peacefully", Putin was quoted as saying, using North Korea's official name. Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson directly called on the worldwide community to act before North Korea carries out a more serious provocation and to impose new sanctions.

In all, six sets of sanctions have been imposed on North Korea since it first tested an atomic device in 2006.

North Korea called on South Korea to honor and fully implement previous inter-Korean agreements on cooperation and reconciliation.

Reclusive North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests and a series of missile tests in defiance of UN Security Council and unilateral resolutions.

Despite global condemnation, Pyongyang has maintained that it will continue its nuclear weapons tests.

It is because not only did the missile successfully hit its target area 787 kilometers away in the sea, it also flew at an altitude of over 2000 kilometers, the highest any North Korean ballistic missile was ever able to reach so far, indicating that Pyongyang's missile technology might have finally come of age.
