Lib Dems to launch General Election manifesto

"CasteWatchUK welcomes the Liberal Democrats manifesto commitment to outlaw caste discrimination".

The party plans to bring in a diesel scrappage scheme and ban the sale of diesel cars and small vans by 2025, while motorists will also face new levies in ultra-low emission zones in 10 towns and cities.

And in an appeal to voters to support the Lib Dems, he said: "Theresa May and Nigel Farage's cold, mean-spirited Britain is not the Britain I love".

"The Britain I love is generous and compassionate".

The tactic has won the backing of Nicole Verat-Pant, a French citizen who can not vote in the upcoming election but whose husband will vote for the Lib Dems. But we lost - and I accept that. The Britain I love is open, tolerant and united.

The extra cash will be raised by increasing income tax by 1%, while the Lib Dems also plan to reverse the Conservatives' cuts to corporation tax.

The manifesto also outlines proposals to restore housing benefit for young people, create a discounted bus pass for 16-21 year olds and introduce votes for 16-year-olds at elections and referendums across the UK.

This week's opinion poll by YouGov and The Times put the Lib Dems in third place behind the Conservatives and the Labour party with 8 percent of prospective votes.

The party, which released its election manifesto today (May 17), also said it would renationalise the Southern Rail and Govia Thameslink rail franchises, which have been locked in long-running industrial disputes over the a year ago.

A senior party figure told The Daily Telegraph: "It would be very helpful if the Lib Dem offer wasn't dominated by views on gay sex and abortion, neither of which are in the manifesto, or only in positive terms if they are".

"We would lift the borrowing cap for local authorities to enable them to build more and make sure that the housing crisis is resolved".

The idea was first proposed by Nick Clegg at the 2015 general election.

But the truth is, as discussed with the party's leader Tim Farron today, its policy-rich little orange book is broadly an irrelevance, for two reasons.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell dismissed the claims as "rubbish" but Mrs May said ordinary people would "pay the price of Labour" in higher taxes, mortgage rates and unemployment at a time when the country was going through Brexit negotiations. The manifesto says that subsidies must rebalance away from direct subsidy and refocus support towards the public goods that come from effective land management including countryside protection, flood prevention, food production, and climate change mitigation.

Other environmental and sustainability policies announced in the manifesto include a diesel scrappage scheme, and a ban on the sale of diesel cars and small vans in the United Kingdom by 2025.
