Robert Mueller III '66 appointed special counsel to Russian Federation investigation

"We are watching in real time an obstruction of justice case unfolding and the president of the United States has an obligation to be more forthcoming with any tapes, memos, memoranda, but in the meantime, there need to be subpoenas that will make sure all of this evidence is preserved and produced", Blumenthal said. When a reporter asked afterward whether he still supports the president, Ryan was reported to have answered, "I do". "And Sept. 11 changed all of that".

Mueller overhauled the agency to prioritize, first, the threat of terrorism from groups like al-Qaida and the Taliban, and then later, the threat from individuals not affiliated with any particular group, like the Tsarnaev brothers.

Comey previously led the FBI's investigation into ties between Trump's national security advisory Michael Flynn and Russian officials.

"The September 11 attacks against NY and Washington changed the course of history".

"While we remain committed to our other important national security and law enforcement responsibilities, the prevention of terrorism takes precedence in our thinking and planning; in our hiring and staffing; in our training and technologies; and, most importantly, in our investigations".

Trump commented late Wednesday after the Justice Department announced the appointment of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller to oversee the probe into Trump-Russian connection in the 2016 election.

Though Rosenstein, like Comey, serves at the pleasure of the president and could be removed without cause at any time, Levitt cautioned that doing so in order to jeopardize Mueller's probe would come at a high political cost.

There's nothing more annoying than getting a delicious cup of iced coffee that melts the second you sit down in the sun. With summer right around the corner, many of us are trading in our classic morning java for a refreshing iced coffee.

"No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly", he said. And later, as head of the Justice Department's criminal division, he oversaw high-profile prosecutions that brought victories against targets as varied as Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega and NY crime boss John Gotti. The FBI's counterterrorism mission was elevated in those years, as the US intelligence agencies' structure was changed to better position America to prevent another attack of that magnitude.

"The Department of Justice should turn over a new leaf". The person who made that decision was James Comey, who was the deputy attorney general at the time.

Now they can use the special counsel appointment to deflect questions about the White House's dissembling and express confidence that the investigation will proceed without any political interference. Comey's dismissal cut short the traditional 10-year term. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, one of several top Republicans tasked with walking the line between partisan loyalties and answering questions swirling around the Russian Federation probe, called Mueller a "great selection" with "impeccable credentials". "Especially with our president and the country being so divided the way it is now".

Republicans and Democrats alike praised Mueller, 72, as someone widely respected for his integrity and independence. And Mueller has already demonstrated that he's willing to defy a president - during the George W. Bush administration, he and James Comey raced to the hospital room of then-attorney general John Ashcroft to prevent two top Bush aides from pressuring the convalescing Ashcroft into reauthorizing the president's domestic surveillance program.

"He won't be swayed by the barking dogs".

Ashcroft, who worked closely with Mueller, added that he used to call Mueller "Square-Jaw McGraw" because of his even-handedness. Within the FBI, Mueller became known for his gruff taciturnity. He previously served as USA attorney in San Francisco. He graduated from the University in 1966 with an politics before going on to earn a master's degree from New York University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. The Justice Department created regulations to keep the concept alive in the form of the special counsel.
