Sen. Angus King on Impeaching Trump: 'Slow Down'

Late Monday, before news of the Comey memo surfaced, Sen.

The letter specifically requests any "recordings, transcripts, notes, summaries, and memoranda" related to conversations between Comey and Trump.

Sideswipe: May 5: Well it is Ask Me Anything. In February, he pressured Comey to drop a pending investigation.

"He says there's a difference between "'Hey, Flynn's a good guy, it would be nice if you cut him a break" as opposed to "I'm the president. "Quit investigating, damn it'".

Some Republicans have begun siding with the many Democrats who are demanding an independent investigation to get to the bottom of a series of issues, including the Trump team's possible connections with Moscow.

Curbelo, who had previously endorsed the creation of a select committee to investigate prior allegations regarding Russian Federation, wants Comey to turn over his notes and testify publicly before Congress so lawmakers can learn firsthand about the president's actions.

The memo was kept secret by Comey and only shared with a handful of people close to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director. The Flynn investigation was part of a broader probe into Russian interference in last year's presidential election.

Macron, Merkel pledge to revamp EU
President Emmanuel Macron will visit French troops in Africa on Friday, a source close to the new leader said on Tuesday. The movement has already revealed a list of 428 candidates, many of whom who have never held elected office before.

Didn't Comey have an obligation at the time to go public with his concerns that the president was obstructing justice, even an obligation to resign in protest? Not long after Comey put that exchange with Trump in writing and after the FBI director told lawmakers the investigation of Russian interference and possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign was active, Comey was sacked.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said in a tweet that he has his "subpoena pen ready".

Ryan, however, pointed to ongoing investigations in the House of Representatives and Senate as well as the FBI investigation of contact between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

That common stance began to shift late Tuesday after media reports surfaced that former FBI director James Comey had written memos alleging President Donald Trump pressured him to halt an investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation. Then, speaking to NBC's Lester Holt, Trump said that right before he fired Comey, he thought of how the Russian Federation investigation was fake news - basically confirming our worst fears and making his entire staff look like fools. The prospect of Trump's impeachment is not a promising one: After the series of scandals and revelations that filled his campaign - and now his presidency - why should we believe that Trump reportedly telling Comey to shut down an investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will be the last straw?

The FBI declined to comment Tuesday.

"We need the facts", House Speaker Paul Ryan, the top Republican in Congress, told reporters in reaction to the explosive reports of Trump's request to the now-sacked James Comey, coming on the heels of claims he shared United States secrets with Russian officials in the Oval Office. The west MI libertarian never endorsed Trump and was a driving force in rejecting an early version of a health care reform bill, a move that led to discussions of his being potentially targeted for defeat next year by the White House. After the news broke of the Comey memo, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stood in the chamber and said, "I say to all of my colleagues in the Senate - history is watching".

For one, he asked Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to leave the room before speaking privately with Comey about Flynn, according to a Comey associate. Curbelo represents the Democratic-leaning 26th district and has cast himself as a moderate; his vote for the American Health Care Act, however, helped narrowly pass a priority bill for Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan.
