Sen. John Cornyn among candidates to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director

He also sent out a tweet in which he appeared to threaten Comey by releasing recordings of their conversations.

Democrats cast the decision to fire Comey as an effort to obstruct the FBI's probe, a charge the White House has denied. "The integrity of our law enforcement agencies and their leadership is of the utmost importance to President Trump".

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!" he wrote on Twitter.

Contending that neither agents nor the association "saw this coming", O'Connor further told the news outlet that few thought Comey did anything to warrant being fired. And he said he feared the world would no longer take Trump at his word.

CNN said Comey is "not anxious about any tapes" Trump may have, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. But Trump on Thursday acknowledged for the first time that the Russian Federation investigation - which he dismissed as a "made-up story" - was also on his mind as he ousted the man overseeing the probe.

But Rosenstein does not see the need at this time for a special prosecutor, CNN reported.

The White House said Trump is weighing options for replacing Comey, a decision that could have broad implications for the future of the Russian Federation investigation.

"Even that is possible", Trump said, speaking on Air Force One before departing for Lynchburg, Virginia, where he delivered a commencement address.

Critics have assailed Trump for abruptly dismissing Comey, who was leading the agency's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump presidential campaign. An official familiar with the matter told Reuters that Comey had agreed in principle to testify behind closed doors.

Long Islanders arrested after Spirit Airlines cancellations
Lauderdale Airport turned into a fight club on May 8, when Spirit Airlines canceled 11 flights at the same time . The pilots union has denied the accusation, saying the cancellations are the airline's fault.

The New York Times said Comey told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it while they dined just seven days after his inauguration. He said the discussions happened in two phone calls and at a dinner in which Comey was asking to keep his job.

Regardless of what one thinks about James Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, his "original sin", according to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and other critics, was his publicly announcing the results of the FBI's investigation last July and subsequent announcements related to that investigation ("Don't say we didn't warn you, Rod Rosenstein", May 11). In Trump's telling, Comey reassured him that he was not.

At the dinner described by Trump in his interview with NBC, the conversation with Comey was quite different.

Currently, the White House holds daily news briefings conducted by the White House press secretary or deputy press secretary. "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!"

In a series of tweets on Friday, Trump also suggested he might cancel future press briefings.

Even before Trump's provocative tweet, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Comey was sacked. And Trump's public statements in an interview on Thursday indicated he had several reasons for firing Comey. Though Trump had the authority to fire Comey, theoretically he could violate the law if the firing was carried out with corrupt intentions.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said the new Federal Bureau of Investigation director should be someone "not of partisan background" with "great experience" and "courage".

USA intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign of interference in the election aimed at tilting the vote in Trump's favor.
