WikiLeaks Offers $100k for 'Tapes' of Private Trump-Comey Chats

President Donald Trump threatened to shut down daily press briefings Friday as he sought to defend his White House from criticism of its shifting explanations and misstatements about the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

In an interview with Fox News Mr Trump said that he didn't want to discuss the matter and that all he wanted was for Mr Comey to be honest.

Critics have assailed Trump for abruptly dismissing Comey just as the agency is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, and possible Moscow ties to the Trump presidential campaign.

"I know some of those people - and they are highly ethical people", President Trump said.

It'd be highly unusual for the White House to elevate an FBI agent to the role of director, and McCabe during a Senate hearing last week broke with the White House's explanations for Comey's firing and its dismissive characterization of the Russian Federation investigation.

Donald Trump has refused to deny recording his meetings with former FBI Director James Comey.

US media quoted an unnamed White House official as saying that 11 candidates are being considered, including acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

According to a report in the New York Times, Mr Comey said he would offer the president honesty, but not loyalty.

The FBI director serves a 10-year term but can be replaced by the USA president. On Friday, however, officials indicated that McCabe is likely to remain awhile longer, at least into next week.

So far 14 people - lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials among them - have emerged as candidates.

Trump asked Comey to end his investigation of Michael Flynn one day after he fired him, according to a memo written by Comey detailing their discussion.

The first candidate has already been interviewed.

Mr Garcia is a former NY prosecutor and Ms Fisher was an assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's criminal division.

Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI's office in Richmond, Virginia.

He said in an interview with NBC News he had already made a decision to sack Mr Comey by the time Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's memo came to him. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, who is under consideration.

- U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, a Bush appointee who struck down the centerpiece of the Obama administration's health care law in 2010.

The FBI has never had a female director. Democrats will also try to use a procedural maneuver to force a vote on legislation calling for an independent commission to investigate Russian election interference, although they're unlikely to prevail.

US Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said Sessions and Rosenstein were involved in the interviews because the Federal Bureau of Investigation director reported to them as attorney general and deputy attorney general.
