Wisconsin And Oklahoma Governors To Tour Damage

A home is damaged by a tree in the May 16 storm. Crews are conducting damage assessments in the Bruce area where 7-8 homes were damaged or destroyed.

Tornadoes reportedly touched down in five states Tuesday night, including Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, in addition to Wisconsin.

Most of the fatalities from tornadoes so far this year occurred during a January 21-22 outbreak that killed 20 people in the South.

The weather will not cooperate for cleanup operations as more rounds of severe weather are in store across the Central states into Friday.

The tornadoes were part of a system of severe storms that rolled through the northern Chippewa Valley Tuesday evening. A tornado in northwestern Wisconsin destroyed a mobile home park, killing one man.

Emergency management officials in Grant County reported a gust that hit 68 miles per hour in Cuba City, and wind felled tree branches in the Hazel Green area and debris was blowing across the highway in Ellenboro. No details were immediately available about the person who was hurt there.

A strong area of rotation within a thunderstorm was detected on radar in Southeast Polk County, Wis., around 4:40 p.m. Monday and then moved into Barron County, the National Weather Service said. This year already has had more tornado-related deaths than all of 2016 - a total of 17 people were killed by tornadoes last year.

The combination of moisture, an unstable air mass, a weak front just west of the Twin Cities combined with wind sheer to set up the severe storm and tornado, he said.

Ringer told KOCO-TV another 50 to 75 homes sustained heavy damage.

The Twin Cities station of the National Weather Service tweeted a photo of large hailstones that fell in the town of Barron, with the largest 3 inches in diameter.

First responders searched through the rubble overnight.

Fitzgerald said all local law enforcement had responded to the mobile home park, along with 12 area ambulances and six fire departments. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are assisting people who lost their homes in the storm.

Another tornado flattened much of a subdivision on the southern fringe of Elk City, Oklahoma, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City. Wisconsin and Oklahoma were two of the hardest hit areas, forcing residents to clean up after several homes and businesses were damaged.

The storm hit the Cameron trailer park at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
