Alice Cooper adds heartfelt message to Chris Cornell tributes

ClickonDetroit is additionally saying police told them he was found with something around his neck, and Fox 2 Detroit is saying "sources tell Fox 2 it could be a possible suicide."

Cornell was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden on a U.S. tour that kicked off last month.

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause", the statement read. "They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time". Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home in 1994; his death was ruled a suicide.

In interviews, Cornell discussed his past struggles with alcohol and the impact of his friends' deaths from substance abuse. "All the friends that I had were still [messed] up with drugs and were people that I didn't really have anything in common with".

Soundgarden predated both grunge pioneers Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but it wasn't an overnight success.

The video shows Cornell jamming out and playing guitar as he sang "Spoonman", a hit single from Soundgarden's 1994 album, "Superunknown". Hear just how far Cornell and Soundgarden's influence could be felt in D'Angelo's rendition of their classic, "Black Hole Sun", below.

Ryan Seacrest mistakes Jeffrey Tambor for dead Ghost actor
Thankfully, Jeffrey Tambor took the error in good heart, although Seacrest better do more research next time. You're gonna be embarrassed", Tambor said. "And I had no idea what he was talking about", Tambor said.

"Seattle's son, Chris Cornell, has passed away", DJ John Richards told listeners.

With Audioslave having disbanded in 2007 due to personality conflicts amongst its members, Cornell reunited with Soundgarden in 2010, releasing "King Animal" two years later and continuing to perform across the country. The band combined 1970s hard rock with 1990s alternative rock, and in its six years of existence, received three Grammy nominations and became the first American rock band to perform in an outdoor concert in Cuba.

Cornell's voice, with its near four octave range and its ability to go from a soul-filled howl to a rumbling growl, was both powerful and memorable, but his skill at writing his own music was just as incredible, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for his work on "The Keeper", from the film "Machine Gun Preacher".

"Detroit finally back to Rock City!" he tweeted. Thinking of his family tonight!

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry shared a photo of himself and Cornell on Twitter and wrote: "Very sad news about Chris Cornell today".
