Donald Trump calls Russian Federation probe political 'witch hunt'

Comey was sacked on May 9.

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to lead a federal investigation into allegations of Donald Trump's presidential campaign collaborating with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election, the Associated Press is reporting.

Trump called talk of potential criminal charges or impeachment "totally ridiculous".

"I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt", Trump responded during his first press conference since Rosenstein named former FBI Director Robert Mueller to oversee the probe.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity", Trump said in a statement released by the White House.

"The best sign that he will need that grit is Donald Trump's tweet about witch hunts", Blumenthal said.

Democrats rejected Trump's characterization. "This is a truth hunt", said Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar. Trump fired Flynn on February 14 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations past year with Russia's ambassador.

"There is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but I can always speak for myself and the Russians - zero", Trump said.

Then Trump admitted he had been considering firing Comey for months.

Rosenstein was due to brief US senators later on Thursday.

The announcement, the latest in the shock-a-day Washington saga, was made a day ahead of Rosenstein's scheduled closed-door appearance today before the Senate.

Senator John Cornyn said he doesn't want congressional probes to "inadvertently impede" the special counsel's investigation, while Graham said it will be hard to "subpoena records of somebody like Michael Flynn, who may be subject to a criminal investigation, because he has a right not to self-incriminate himself".

"Sessions wanted a memo on Comey's sins, and Rosenstein felt he had to oblige his boss... as long as he didn't have to expressly say something he didn't believe", Columbus wrote, adding that Rosenstein never recommended that Comey be fired. "I don't know", she answers.

Graham said Rosenstein "talked about why he wrote the memo" detailing Comey's lapses as Federal Bureau of Investigation director just before Comey was sacked, but for "all things related to the process of the memo I think we'll - you'll need to talk to Mr. Mueller about that".

Mr Trump categorically denied he asked Mr Comey to drop his probe of Mr Flynn, whom he fired on Feb 14 for misleading Vice-President Mike Pence, about the extent of his conversations past year with Russia's ambassador.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller after a succession of events brought to a head questions over Russia's alleged meddling in the election.

The people who described the contacts to Reuters said they had seen no evidence of wrongdoing or collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation in the communications reviewed so far. Mueller will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he uncovers. It cited two people briefed on the call. He has no obligation to consult with the Justice Department about his investigation, and especially with an FBI director hand-picked by Trump.
