Jharkhand: Villagers lynch 6 on suspicion of child theft

Reports said in East Singbhum district, three men were killed and a woman was injured after villagers dragged them out of a house and thrashed them in the open air amid rumors of kidnapping children.

According to police, eight persons arrived at the district's Rajnagar village in two vehicles.

The vehicle in which Sheikh Naim, 35, Sheikh Sajju, 25, Sheikh Siraj, 26 and Sheikh Halim, 28 had been travelling was chased by nearly 100 people and stopped at the Daru village where Naim was beaten up while the other three escaped. Another person was beaten to death in the Shobhapur village by local residents, Kumar added.

Last week, three persons were lynched in the same district for being suspected child lifters.

The third lynching, in which three people died, took place in Nagadih, Superintendent of Police (City) Prasant Anand told PTI.

Allegations of child kidnapping were circling through five or six villages in the region, said the police.

Some of the villagers were identified and action would be taken after investigation, Kumar said, adding that senior officers have gone to the spot with reinforcement.

At least six people were lynched in two different incidents in India's eastern state of Jharkhand over rumors of child abduction, officials said Friday.

The first incident occurred in Rajnagar block's Sobhapur village where four Muslim youth, all cattle traders, were cornered and lynched by villagers.
