Macron To Visit Merkel In First Foreign Trip As French President

Western leaders largely hailed the result after the shock of Britain's vote to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump in the United States after Macron reached out to Le Pen's supporters in a plea for unity after a vicious election campaign.

Valls told RTL radio that France's Socialist party "is dead and behind us" and said he wants to join up with President-elect Emmanuel Macron's Republic on the Move.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has congratulated Emmanuel Macron for winning the French presidency on Sunday - moving beyond a French campaign that had angered Poland's authorities.

Without a working majority, Macron could quickly become a lame-duck president, unable to push through labor reforms and other measures he promised to the broadly disgruntled electorate - shown by a record result for his defeated far-right opponent, Marine Le Pen, and a record number of blank and spoiled ballots in Sunday's runoff vote.

The new French leader "carries the hopes of millions of French people and also many in Germany and across Europe". "The growing threat of terrorism and militant extremism is accompanied by an escalation of local conflicts and the destabilization of entire regions".

In the job, Mueller will have all the same powers as a US attorney, though he will still ultimately report to Rosenstein. Former FBI director Robert Mueller's appointment as special counsel has been welcomed by politicians from both sides.

One proponent of euro bonds told Reuters on Monday that Macron's clear win in Sunday's election could mark a step toward creation of such instruments.

She sees Macron as a key ally in bolstering the European Union with Berlin and Paris at the helm.
