But while there is still plenty at stake for Palace, United can not move from sixth position and the Red Devils' boss Jose Mourinho has said he intends to play several youngsters, with his focus on the Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday.

Not being in Europe's premier competition will cost the club in terms of their finances and also attracting players, and will mean Mourinho has essentially failed to deliver.

"We will play our 56th game next Wednesday", he told reporters. They haven't fared worse than their current tally of 17 since 1990-91, when they ended the campaign with 16 victories.

Mourinho has no plans to use De Gea in either game, but he has insisted that he wants the 26-year-old to stay amid rumours of a Real Madrid switch.

Mourinho said that Peter Bosz's side should have been eliminated from European football entirely this season, once they were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Defeat on Sunday would equal their club record of 21 defeats in a Premier League season, set in 1997-98.
