Sanders: Special counsel isn't 'witch hunt,' it's the 'right thing to do'

Trump is responding to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead a probe of allegations that Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the election. Also, at any moment, the Justice Department can find out what Mueller is doing and order him not to follow a certain path in the investigation.

The dismissal sent shockwaves through Washington, with critics accusing Trump of trying to thwart the FBI investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the U.S. presidential election and his possible collusion with the Kremlin. The others were former Connecticut Sen.

Who is Robert Mueller anyway?

During his tenure as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, from 2001 to 2013, he served both Republican and Democratic administrations, overseeing a shake-up of a huge bureaucracy blamed for missing evidence that could have prevented the September 11, 2001 attacks, and earning high respect from both parties.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed to serve as a special prosecutor on the case after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. There are nearly certainly going to be a few Trump loyalists who will have reason to call on the president to use his pardoning powers.

In any event, Trump advisers should be rushing to his side this morning to urge him not to publicly contradict his own privately calm reaction to the Mueller appointment.

Q. What are a special counsel's powers? One difference, however: Special counsels get to choose whether they inform the Justice Department what they're up to.

Q. What's the difference between a special counsel and a special prosecutor or an independent counsel?

But how independent is the special counsel from the Trump administration? .

The appointment was a concession by the Trump administration, which had resisted calls from Democrats to turn the investigation over to outside counsel. Special counsels can be fired only by the "personal action" of the attorney general.

Sen. Chris Coons, D- Del., told The Washington Post that Rosenstein's recommendation to Trump to fire Comey puts his "credibility is on a very shaky foundation with many of my colleagues".

Trump said Thursday during a joint press conference with Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos, that he respects "the entire thing" but said that he personally has no ties to Russian Federation. Washington's focus now turns to Mueller, and how he will conduct the FBI investigation into the alleged Russian involvement in the campaign.

That claim has been denied by both Washington and Moscow, with Russian President Vladimir Putin offering on Wednesday to release the records of the meeting, while accusing the United States of developing "political schizophrenia". "But I have no doubts that he is up to that task".

To be clear, it is also entirely possible, as the president has said, that the investigation will reveal no wrongdoing on his part.

How long will the investigation take?
