Sen. Collins wants Comey to testify, deliver memos on Trump meeting

This was the original reason provided by the White House in the immediate wake of Comey's dismissal, but two days later Trump revealed in a NBC interview: "It was set up a while ago".

Ryan said Congress needs to get the facts, but "it is obvious there are some people out there who want to harm the president".

Several congressional Republicans said Wednesday that if Trump did suggest that Comey "let this go" regarding Flynn's Russian contacts, it was probably just a joke, light banter. "It feels like everything is up in the air, everything is chaotic, and there's some lack of leadership coming from the White House". The Times noted that the conversations prove that Trump's team knew about the investigation earlier than previously said.

The White House has denied reports that Trump pressed Comey to drop an investigation into Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing, after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices.

"Comey lost confidence of nearly everyone in Washington, Republicans and Democrats alike". Trump defended himself against backlash from his critics, the media and Democrats alike during a rambling commencement speech Wednesday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

The top White House official spoke to the Daily Beast on condition of anonymity when asked about POTUS sharing highly classified national security information with Russian diplomats and also the revelation that James Comey kept notes of his dealings with Trump - and there was one memo in which the president asked the then-FBI director to halt his investigation into Michael Flynn over his ties to Russia.

Mr Flynn, a retired general, is under scrutiny in multiple federal investigations into financial links to foreign governments and whether he helped Russian Federation interfere in the presidential election. "We need a law enforcement professional, not someone who's run for office before", she said.

He had founded the country's only LGBT magazine Roopbaan and was a leading organizer of gays, who are ostracized in Bangladesh. Many prominent homosexual activists have since fled the country after several of them received death threats.

The Russia matter has consumed Washington and overshadowed Republican legislative priorities including a planned healthcare overhaul and sweeping tax cuts, something the party had hoped to make rapid progress on given its control of the White House and both chambers of Congress.

John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said late Tuesday that the developments had reached "Watergate size and scale".

One striking piece of news emerged from Rosenstein's briefing: He told senators that he had already known Comey was getting fired even as he wrote the memo that Trump cited as a significant justification for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's dismissal.

Notably, however, Comey has written "similar memos...about every phone call and meeting he has had with the president", the Times reported.

He explained that when Trump allegedly made the request to end the investigation of Flynn in February, Comey could have immediately warned the president that the conversation was inappropriate and that a request like that should never be made again.

Trump is preparing to leave town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.

Collins, along with Maine's other senator, independent Angus King, sits on the senate intelligence committee, which is conducting its own investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and contacts and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
