The next Federal Bureau of Investigation director

The next Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Donald Trump is considering almost a dozen candidates to succeed ousted FBI Director James Comey, choosing from a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials. This would devolve into a tutorial on obstruction of justice, queries about a White House taping system, a reaffirmation of the conclusion that Russian Federation meddled in our election (which would contradict the president) and a critique of Trump's alleged conversations with Comey.

Once Comey uttered those words, President Donald Trump could not fire him - absent proof of criminal conduct or unethical behavior - without creating the appearance of impropriety or the appearance of undermining the investigation.

Trump told NBC News that he was frustrated by the ongoing investigation and believed it was motivated by Democrats' fury at losing the election. Aides later said the president had been considering firing Comey for months, and Trump said he would have made the decision regardless of the Justice Department recommendation. The FBI has not confirmed that Comey ever made those assurances to the president. Trump fired Comey this past week.

While Comey has drawn anger from Democrats since he reopened the email investigation in the closing days of last year's campaign, they didn't buy that justification for his firing.

The letter says there is no equity investment by Russians in entities controlled by Trump or debt owed by Trump to Russian lenders. Not everyone agreed with each Comey decision, but he was a popular and well-regarded director, they said.

"His dismissal further confuses an already hard investigation by the committee", Burr said. On Wednesday, Trump labeled the Senate minority leader "Cryin' Chuck Schumer". He previously led Federal Bureau of Investigation field offices in Washington, one of the agency's largest, and in Detroit. President Bill Clinton dismissed William Sessions amid allegations of ethical lapses in 1993.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Congress must form a special committee to investigate Russia's interference in the election.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" His name was floated as a possible replacement for then-FBI Director Robert Mueller in 2013, and he received support from an association of FBI agents before President Barack Obama chose Comey.

Praised frequently by both parties for his independence and integrity, he spent three decades in law enforcement.

A deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush, Thompson served as the department's No. 2 from 2001 to 2003. Two of the names (John Cornyn and Trey Gowdy) now serve in Congress; one (Suther) is the current mayor of Colorado Springs and; one (Rogers) is a former member of Congress.

But his prominent role in the 2016 presidential campaign raised questions about his judgment and impartiality. He has been a member of the Senate GOP leadership team for a decade and serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He said he was "mildly nauseous" at the thought of having swayed the election but also said he would do the same again.
