Trevor Plouffe changes walk-up music as tribute to late Chris Cornell

Some of the lines from the song that Cornell sang include, "I want nobody to mourn/All I want for you to do is take my body home".

But Cornell spoke fondly of Detroit, repeatedly, the one element of the show he seemed truly excited about, and talked about the audience being unparalleled.

His final song of the night was Badmotorfinger's "Slaves & Bulldozers" and while performing it, Soundgarden worked in a little bit of Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying".

This year's "Six Degrees" program was going to be for musician David Byrne, but with the sudden death of Cornell, KEXP DJs made a decision to "shift gears" and pay tribute to him instead. Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry tweeted: "Very sad news about Chris Cornell today".

Sad new arrived this morning with the announcement of Chris Cornell's death, after being found unresponsive in his Detroit hotel room.

During the encore, Cornell added that, "Detroit, you up!"

The Wayne County (Mich.) Medical Examiner's Office ruled Cornell's death a suicide by hanging.

He said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.

The death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has fans devastated.

Media outlets in Detroit, quoting paramedics and police sources, reported there were no suspicious circumstances and his death was an apparent suicide.

Cornell was on tour and performed Wednesday night in Detroit with Soundgarden. Representatives for the band called his death "sudden and unexpected".

Soundgarden bagged Grammys in 1995 for their songs Black Hole Sun and Spoonman.

Cornell was a leader of the grunge movement with Seattle-based Soundgarden - with whom he gained critical and commercial acclaim - but also found success outside the band with other projects, including Audioslave, Temple of the Dog as well as solo albums.

In 2001, Cornell joined with three former members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave.

With Audioslave, Cornell took a leftist political slant and the band in 2005 became the first United States rockers to play a major concert in Cuba.

Soundgarden would reunite by 2010 and go on to release two more albums, with another en route.

Cornell performed and produced solo albums throughout his career. He released the single "The Promise" in March on iTunes, with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee, a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development non-governmental organization.
