Trump denies asking Comey to drop probe, colluding with Russia

Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan however said it was crucial to let investigations run their course before rushing to judgment.

Trump, including one in which the president allegedly asked him to drop a probe of Flynn.

Trump sent Comey a letter last week abruptly firing him. He took a more cautious tone about Democratic party calls for broader investigations of the Trump administration.

"I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt", Trump said.

Trump's embattled presidency, which has invited increasingly frequent comparison with Richard Nixon and Watergate, passed a new landmark at the press conference when he was asked bluntly, in front of a foreign head of state, whether he recalled anything he had done that "might be worthy of criminal charges in these investigation or impeachment".

Trump's latest comments stood in contrast to his measured statement on Wednesday night after the announcement of Mueller's appointment, when he said "a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".

Trump was also asked about his thoughts on the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Muller to lead the probe.

The whole situation has taken the president and congressional leaders off-message and forced them to explain what the ties were between Trump's staff and Russian Federation, he said.

Meanwhile, even as Washington digests the torrent of controversial Trump news, his economic team is moving ahead by meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill about tax reform.

The news of the Russian meeting also came a day after Mr Trump dismissed Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey from his post.

Two days after Trump became president, Comey attended a ceremony that Trump hosted honoring law enforcement officials and tried to blend in with the curtains to avoid being noticed by the president, according to a report by The New York Times.

"There was no collusion", he said.

The memo has sparked outrage among Democrats who say they believe they have enough to impeach the President on "obstruction of justice"-even though they don't control enough seats in Congress to actually do the job".

Congress must seek answers and all available evidence of reports that Donald Trump dissuaded former FBI Director James Comey from pursuing an investigation into Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian officials.

Trump and Lieberman discussed the position at the White House on Wednesday. He was sacked as national security adviser in February after it emerged he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador to Washington in December. "But I think the public would like to see that, and I'd like to see it as well", he said on KSL Newsradio's "The Doug Wright Show". It is the kind of conversation that seems completely in character for Trump, who, over the course of the campaign and now in office, has betrayed no - zero - understanding of the necessary separation of the president and his Justice Department when it comes to making independent judgments about political matters and political opponents.
