AT&T Wireless Store Workers Begin Weekend Strike

AT&T workers across the country walked off the job to start what could be a three-day strike.

Landline workers in California and Nevada picketed for a day in March to protest work rules for some in-home technicians and moves to replace USA call-center jobs with contractors hired overseas. We're confident employees will be better off financially in their new contracts. Last year, they voted to authorize a strike with more than 95 percent support.

In an era when immigrant scapegoating has become even more widespread with the election of Donald Trump to the White House, the union's report is refreshing in highlighting the struggles of workers across AT&T's global footprint who are engaged in their own battles for union representation and a living wage. Only 38,000 jobs added. "They can easily afford to do what people want and instead are continuing to send jobs overseas".

The strike comes at a hard time for AT&T's wireless business, which has faced intense pressure since the start of the year from aggressive competitors and apathetic customers.

AT&T and DirecTV workers who are members of Communications Workers of America walked off the job Friday, protesting what they call "AT&T's failure to present serious proposals that invest in good jobs with a future".

Some people think Google's virtual assistant beats Siri in reliability and capability. At that point we asked Assistant to play a song "on Apple Music" and it did so.

No one from the company could be reached for comment.

Slightly over half of the workers on strike are part of the wireless segment and the rest wireline workers, including a small number of DirecTV technicians, AT&T spokesman Marty Richter told Reuters. Our message is clear: fair contract or strike.

About 500 AT&T workers are striking right now in Evansville. Several hit the picket line Friday to take a stand during contract talks.

The union said workers planned to be back on their regular shifts Monday morning. Others are employed in call centers spread out across the country. Shortly after he was elected, Trump promised: "I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created".
