Comey now believes Trump was trying to influence him, source says

The news of a potential cover-up investigation came just hours after the Washington Post reported that an official now working in the Trump administration who is close to the president is a "significant person of interest" in the investigation.

Mr Kushner has long advised the President both during his campaign and in the White House.

Among the most explosive reports: that Trump earlier this year asked for a pledge of personal loyalty from Comey, and that the president asked Comey to drop an investigation into his then-national security adviser, Mike Flynn. But he made clear it was not his intention for Trump or other White House officials to use the document to justify firing Comey, which is what they have done.

Trump, accompanied by wife Melania, walk across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington on Friday.

Trump, who has embraced what he describes as an "America First" approach to USA foreign policy and worldwide trade, is expected to be welcomed warmly by leaders in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

In that same conversation, Trump referred to Comey as "crazy" and "a real nut job", according to the Times.

"I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", Burr said.

Trump has strongly denied any collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russian Federation and has rejected allegations that he pressured Comey to drop a related investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn - saying "the entire thing has been a witch hunt".

The Times report added to the impression given by Trump himself in a television interview last week in which he said that the Russian Federation issue was a factor in firing Comey, although the White House has given different versions of the reasons for the dismissal.

Trump met with the Russians on May 10, the day after he fired Comey.

The Post said its sources would not further identify the official, who was described as a person close to President Trump.

That is according to a document summarising the meeting obtained by The New York Times.

White House hopes that Trump could leave scandalous allegations at home were crushed in a one-two punch of revelations that landed shortly after his departure.

She said it's a "ridiculous statement" for Trump to make and results in "elevating the Russians as his confidante at the expense of our justice system".

Mr Trump clearly knew what he wanted to say as he took a few questions at a news briefing with visiting Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

Also on Friday, Comey agreed to testify before the Senate intelligence committee after Memorial Day. The date of the hearing has not yet been set. The Post also reported that while the initial investigation was into coordination between Trump officials and Russian Federation, sources said it has expanded to include potential financial crimes committed by those close to Trump.

In a statement, he said that Comey had put unnecessary pressure on the president's ability to conduct diplomacy with Russian Federation on matters such as Syria, Ukraine, and the Islamic State.

Sources told the news network that Russian officials were heard boasting of the close relationship they had developed with Flynn, who would eventually be chosen by Trump to serve as his national security adviser - but who was sacked from the post only weeks into the new administration's term.
