Cornell family cites drug he was prescribed

The medical examiner from Wayne County has confirmed Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell committed suicide by hanging. Cornell's family said that without toxicology test results completed they don't know what caused his death.

Lawyer Kirk Pasich said Cornell, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan, which he said has a range of side effects, including suicidal thoughts.

Mr Cornell had retired to his hotel room after performing with his main band, Soundgarden, at downtown Detroit's Fox Theatre.

Cornell was found dead on the bathroom floor - reportedly with a band around his neck. On may 17, the group performed in Detroit, in the schedule of the team was still the may concerts.

"Chris' death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled", Vicky Cornell added.

Police said the 52-year-old musician's death was being investigated as a possible suicide.

"I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different", Karayiannis said in a statement. "The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions".

Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro said he was "so so stunned" to hear of Cornell's death, saying it was "such a awful and sad loss".

Cornell, who grew up in Seattle, said he started using drugs at age 13 and was kicked out of school at 15.

In a past interview Cornell beamed over his wife saying: "When I met my wife Vicky's family, I had to go out of my way to convince them - to show them - that I wasn't anything like their idea of a musician". "All the friends that I had were still (messed) up with drugs and were people that I didn't really have anything in common with".

"What happened is inexplicable, and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details", she said. "I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life".

Soundgarden's current tour kicked off in late April and was planned to run through May 27.

Besides Soundgarden, Cornell founded the early grunge band Temple Of The Dog and sang with Audioslave - a supergroup with members of Rage Against the Machine.

Chris Cornell, one of the most lauded and respected contemporary lead singers in rock music with his bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, hanged himself Wednesday in a Detroit hotel room, according to the city's medical examiner.

Soundgarden had one of the heaviest sounds in grunge with trappings of heavy metal, even though Cornell cited The Beatles, to whom he listened constantly as a child, as his biggest influence.
