She said Mr Macron, who at 39 is to become France's youngest ever president, carried the hopes of "millions" of French people, but also of "many" Germans, and she hoped the two would be able to tackle mass unemployment in Europe.

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated French President-elect Emmanuel Macron on his "spectacular" election success, pledging to help France tackle unemployment and to work together with him to promote European stability.

His centrist En Marche (On the Move) movement, barely a year old, has said it will field candidates in every constituency in the two-round election in June. He'll be replaced by Catherine Barbaron.

Their frostiness stems in part from Mr Valls's refusal to say whether he would formally join Mr Macron's République en Marche party. Ferrand also said the names of Macron's 577 candidates in the legislative elections would be announced this Thursday.

French nationals working in Singapore expressed relief at the results of the presidential polls in France, saying that the prospect of the country's economy closing off to the world has been averted.

The nomination process is a careful balancing act for Macron and represents major risks for his presidency, which will begin formally on Sunday when he takes over from outgoing Socialist Francois Hollande.

The vote appeared to be as much a rejection of Le Pen as it was an endorsement of Macron.

"In these conditions it is especially important to overcome mutual distrust and join forces to ensure worldwide stability and security". If another party wins a majority, Macron could be pressured to choose a prime minister from that party.

She had hoped that the surprise election of populist firebrand Donald Trump in United States, and the Brexit result in the United Kingdom (UK), would favour her hardline opposition to the European Union, globalisation and immigration.
