First Tejas train to run on May 22

Since the train is equipped with better facilities, the fare will also be slightly higher as compared to normal mail/express service, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said while inspecting the new Tejas coaches here.

With LED touch-screens for each seat, "Lazy Boy" type recliners, USB charging ports for all passengers, automatic doors and other upgrades, the first of the Tejas brand of trains is finally ready to run from Mumbai to Goa on May 22.

At present, the Mumbai LTT-Madgaon double-decker Express leaves around 5.30am. There is no certainty on whether the double-decker service will continue alongside the Tejas.

The train will have modern facilities like smoke and fire detection system, bio-vacuum toilets and GPS-based passenger information display system. All preparations have been done for the launch of the 20-coach train, which will have secured gangways, automatic doors, and 22 new features.

There will be tea/coffee vending machines and snack tables in each of the new designed coaches.

In his last year's Budget speech, Prabhu had promised Tejas to showcase the future of travelling by trains in India. Tejas Express will also run on the Delhi-Chandigarh and Surat-Mumbai routes, the Indian Railways has announced.

A report by The Hindu said that the fare that has not been disclosed but officials point out that it will be almost 30% more than Shatabdi and other premium trains. The cuisine will be curated by celebrity chefs. However, as the tracks can not endure such high speed, it will be restricted to 160 kmph, RCF General Manager (GM) R P Nibaria told news agency Press Trust of India.

Nibaria also said he expects the Tejas Express to start operations by the end of this month. "Such facilities and features are the first of its kind in the Indian Railways", said the officials.
