Former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman On Trump's Short List For FBI Director

He also was the USA attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma and served in a law enforcement position in Washington during the administration of former President Ronald Reagan. Trump has not signaled that anyone else has replaced Lieberman as his top preference since then.

Asked whether the 75-year-old was a front-runner, Trump responded "yes" - confirming Lieberman's surprise candidacy. Blumenthal declined to comment on Lieberman or any other possible candidates for the job. Politico's Burgess Everett and Seung Min Kim report that Senate Republicans have lined up in support of Lieberman, if Trump nominates him, and if that's the case, there won't be any problem - with confirmation, anyway. And asked if Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-independent senator from CT was a top candidate, Trump said yes. The president has suggested he hopes to name Comey's successor before he departs Friday for his first overseas trip as president.

Trump was meeting Wednesday afternoon with four Federal Bureau of Investigation director candidates, just as he is facing fresh questions over his firing of former director James Comey.

Blumenthal said the next director could be "a career prosecutor with a distinguished background - not just any prosecutor".

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., was blunter. After all, in 2008 he backed the candidate trying to put Sarah Palin a heartbeat from the presidency and in 2010 he said "everybody should listen" to Palin. "He has great respect and affection from both sides of the aisle". Lieberman served as CT state attorney general for six years, ending in 1989, but otherwise has held political office.

In his 2000 vice presidential run, Lieberman was the first Jewish person to run on a major party ticket in a presidential race.

But according to Gary Neville, Jose Mourinho has enjoyed an even better Chelsea team than the one now being overseen by Conte. Conte said his "door is open" for Holland to stay, but the former Italy boss understands the lure of the national team.

Lieberman served in the Senate from 1989 through 2013. He won re-election, and two years later, further angered Democrats by endorsing Sen.

Senate President Pro Tem Martin Looney has known Lieberman for the past 42 years as fellow New Haven Democrats and former state Senate majority leaders. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Lieberman endorsed Hillary Clinton, despite discussing the possibility of supporting Trump. "But we need a law enforcement professional, not someone who's run for office before", said Sen.

However, NBC reported on Wednesday that Lieberman has not decided if he'll accept the job if it's offered to him, saying that the news was "unexpected". Lieberman serves on the board of a DeVos-founded education organization.

The president is said to have also met with three other top candidates in former Oklahoma Gov. Comey was overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's role in the presidential election, including ties between Russian government officials and Trump associates.

On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas), a leading candidate to fill the post, withdrew from consideration.
