Lewis Hamilton hails his 'rawest fight' ever after winning Spanish Grand Prix

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Lewis Hamilton was ecstatic after his race win at the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, labelling the close battle between himself and Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel as "the rawest fight I can remember having in a long time". Hamilton finished the race on a faster set of tires than Vettel, passing the German on Lap 43 of 66 and conserving his tires as he sped away to victory.

"Seb was really fast", Hamilton said after the race. I felt like I ran out of road. "I don't have a drink in the vehicle [to save weight], so yeah I was feeling it, and that's how racing should be". I was lucky I was getting a tow. "So obviously it's nice to have close battles but you want to have them in your favour at the end of the race which today wasn't the case, but that's how it goes sometimes".

Hamilton won despite suffering another poor getaway.

The Force India cars were great during the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix. We came out so close together, which was super tight into Turn 1.

"If we had had the same tires on, it probably wouldn't have been as exciting" Hamilton said.

Lewis Hamilton edged Formula 1 title rival Sebastian Vettel to take honours in a dramatic Spanish Grand Prix, with the Mercedes ace calling their wheel-to-wheel scrap "awesome". I got a bit fortunate with Valtteri's problem towards the end of the race which bumped me up to third, but of course I'm still happy to be up there again and see all the smiles from the team. "They did a wonderful job with the strategy and the pit stops".

Hamilton recovered from losing his lead to the German at the first corner to overtake Vettel on lap 44, and the Briton held on to win and cut Vettel's advantage in the drivers' championship to six points.

An engine failure forced Bottas to retire in lap 39.

Ferrari's threat has brought out another dimension in Mercedes, who are compelled to be tougher, cleverer and more adaptable than at any stage of their three-and-a half year supremacy in the sport.

"We knew it was a risk switching back to the old Power Unit in terms of the mileage, but we didn't if we wanted to qualify yesterday".

Mercedes made a decision to keep Hamilton out, and he immediately pumped in the fastest lap of the race and stretched his stint by an extra five laps.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen went out at the start after a collision with Red Bull's 2016 victor Verstappen. I tried to brake as late as possible into turn one, locked up, but managed to stay ahead.

"Lewis was on a different strategy while I was running long". I tried to carry speed and, for sure, we didn't collide on goal. The accident warranted the need of a virtual safety vehicle and saw Vandoorne retire from the race. We both love racing.
