Most Republicans close ranks to defend Trump

"Our job is to be responsible, sober and focus only on gathering the facts".

The daily Trump-Comey-Flynn imbroglio and its potential legal ramifications for President Donald Trump suggest it may be time-or past time-for the embattled president to "lawyer up", veteran white-collar defense lawyers say. Curbelo even demanded a correction from Mother Jones after the magazine reported that Amash had been the first to call for Trump's impeachment. Mr Trump, who appeared to confirm that he had indeed done some impromptu intelligence-sharing-"As President I wanted to share with Russian Federation... facts pertaining to terrorism"-appears hapless by comparison". What's more, many worry that the dumpster fire will suck oxygen out of Congress' ambitious legislative agenda.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that "less drama from the White Ho us e" was needed to advance legislative priorities.

"I spoke to him (Lavrov) today", a smiling Putin told a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi. Firing Comey seemed like the best option.

The charitable explanation is that the committee just want to be super-duper-thorough; the less charitable explanation is that even though they now feel obliged to investigate Comey's allegations against the sitting president, Republicans are still hoping they can somehow muddy the waters with a much broader, much slower investigation.

Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Tuesday night that he is requesting the Federal Bureau of Investigation to submit all the files and recordings involving any communications between Comey and Trump.

In a departure from past firestorms, top aides did not appear on television to rebut the claims, and Trump did not respond on Twitter.

House Intelligence Committee vice chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Congress needs to see any documents created by Comey.

But Mr Trump confirmed that the exchange had took place when he tweeted: "As President I wanted to share with Russian Federation (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety".

On Saturday, she wrote to students that she was wrong to make the remarks. "There are no two ways about it", she wrote. Chu has since deleted her Yelp account, but the Daily News published screenshots of several reviews she wrote.

According to the United States constitution Congress is tasked with oversight over the Executive Branch. A growing list of GOP lawmakers - including Sen.

On Capitol Hill, some Republicans have begun siding with the many Democrats demanding an independent investigation into the Trump team's possible connections with Moscow.

Ryan and his fellow Republicans are clearly anxious for a legislative achievement before the midterm elections next year, whether it is repealing and replacing Obamacare or a tax bill.

Republican Representative Steve Womack said it was important for committees investigating the R us sia matter to move forward expeditio us ly to both ensure that the public gets answers and to clear the way for Congress to move on to other issues.

Meanwhile, they are happy to parrot Trump's talking points that the self-inflicted scandals somehow represent a media conspiracy. "It is obvious there are some people out there who want to harm the president and that means before rushing to judgment we (must) get all the pertinent information", Efe news agency quoted Paul Ryan as saying on Wednesday.

And so Democrats' clamor for Republicans to stand up to the president does not resonate.

Comey declined to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in the days following his firing.

An impeachment by the House is a step toward removing a president, but that alone can not force him to step down. And since the people who are in office in the Republican Party are elected by people who listen nearly exclusively to the self-contained conservative media they have much less incentive to actually do something because they fear they will be punished by their constituents if they were to betray or abandon the president of the United States.

"I can't think of a single Republican colleague of mine that I've talked to, at least privately, who hasn't expressed real concern [about the memo]", Warner told reporters Wednesday.
