Trump Denies Asking Ex-FBI Director Comey to Drop Flynn Inquiry

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) as a special counsel to lead a federal investigation into allegations that Donald Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election that put him in the White House.

President Donald Trump listens to questions from the media as he meets with Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos in the Oval Office on May 18, 2017.

Mr. Comey - who is 6 feet 8 inches tall and was wearing a dark blue suit that day - told Mr. Wittes that he tried to blend in with the blue curtains in the back of the room, in the hopes that Mr. Trump would not spot him and call him out. "I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things".

U.S. President Donald Trump, striking a defiant tone on Thursday after days of political tumult, denied asking former FBI Director James Comey to drop a probe into his former national security adviser and decried a "witch hunt" against him.

The Justice Department says Mueller, the new special counsel, has been given sweeping power to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, including potential links between Moscow and Trump associates.

"Director Comey was very unpopular with most people", Mr Trump claimed, adding that he thought his firing would be a "bipartisan decision".

Kushner has been heavily involved in the preparations for President Trump's trip, especially the Saudi stop. What has changed, he added, is the House of Saud is now dealing directly with a member of the Trump family.

At one point in the news conference, Ryan appeared caught off-guard when a Fox News reporter asked him to comment about some GOP lawmakers suggesting they would prefer Vice President Pence as president.

During the course of Thursday's press conference, Trump said he fired Comey based on the recommendation made by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Former Senator Joe Lieberman waves as he leaves after a meeting with President Donald Trump for candidates for Federal Bureau of Investigation director at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 17, 2017. "Russia is fine." On whether the questions surrounding Russian Federation and his campaign were divisive, Trump added: "I think it divides the country".

"And he said that ever since, the President had been trying to be chummy in a fashion that Comey felt was created to absorb him into Trump's world - to make him part of the team".

He said he respected the special counsel appointment but also said it "hurts our country terribly".
