Trump labels Russian Federation inquiry 'witch hunt'

"I believe it hurts our country terribly", Trump told network anchors during a luncheon Thursday afternoon at the White House.

Rosenstein may have been asked about his decision to open an independent investigation, as well as the circumstances surrounding the memo he wrote about Comey. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) told reporters after emerging from the session.

Donald Trump has said he fired James Comey as FBI Director because he was '"unpopular", during a press conference with the Colombian president.

Comey's successor He said he would announce Mr Comey's successor "very soon".

"All over the world, no matter where you go, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is special", Mr Trump said.

Curbelo said that he "can understand why this situation is frustrating to the president", but that Trump must understand there's a need investigate Russia's role in the 2016 election. There are no other reports of disruptions, but the department said it is monitoring all flights Friday out of caution. The Department of Homeland Security tweeted that the person was detained and the incident appeared to be isolated.

He followed that up with a tweet accusing President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and associates of "illegal acts" that were more deserving of special-counsel scrutiny. He has likened the appointment of the Special Counsel with the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history". Earlier this week, multiple outlets reported that during a private meeting in February, Trump asked Comey to stop looking into Flynn's ties to Russian Federation.

Rosenstein appointed ex-FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to handle the entire Russian Federation investigation Wednesday and answered questions from senators on the decision to do so and the future of that investigation.

Trump is both publicly and privately stewing about Rosenstein's decision to name a special counsel.

"I didn't hear anything classified" during the briefing, Graham said. Rosenstein threatened to resign from the Justice Department because of the explanation that White House officials were giving reporters about the firing, said the person close to the White House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"I think a lot of members want the special counsel to be appointed, but don't understand that you're pretty well knocked out of the game", Graham said.

"People have to understand that now that we've handed it off to a special counsel that that's where most of the questions are going to have to be directed", said Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the third-ranking Republican.
