Trump on his alleged ties to Russia: this is greatest witch hunt

US President Donald Trump has denounced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate his campaign's ties with Russian Federation, calling it an unprecedented "witch hunt" that "hurts our country terribly".

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".

What are the odds?

Rosenstein told the U.S. Senate on Thursday that he knew President Donald Trump meant to fire Comey before he wrote the memo.

"I think that's an open question", said Democratic Senator Chris Coons, when asked if Comey would appear before Congress, adding that it remains to be seen "how ongoing congressional investigations will be coordinated with the special counsel".

Durbin and other lawmakers said Rosenstein did not indicate who in the Trump administration told him to write the memo with the rationale for ousting Comey.

President Trump also ripped any idea his actions since taking office might be impeachable.

Republicans have largely stood behind Mr Trump in the first months of his presidency as the FBI and congressional investigations into Russia's election meddling intensified.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives still have committees conducting their own probes into whether Trump campaign advisers conspired with Russian operatives to influence the 2016 United States presidential election.

As per usual, Trump took to Twitter to rant about the issue. A selloff in USA stocks looked set to extend into its second day on Thursday.

Donald Trump has claimed he is victim of the "greatest witch hunt" in U.S. history amid a probe of his team's alleged links with Russian Federation. In this case, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was able to appoint Mueller because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself.

The appointment of a special counsel to take over the Russian Federation probe was praised by Democrats and Trump's fellow Republicans. "I certainly hope there wasn't any but if there is there are going to be very serious consequences", Mr Dent told CNN.

"The need for former director Comey to come testify in public soon is as great as ever", said Chuck Schumer, the Senate's top Democrat.

Things went from bad to worse for Trump when a New York Times report alleged that he had attempted to persuade Comey to abandon the FBI's investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. In his announcement, Rosenstein said he made the decision because a "Special Counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome".
