Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein defends Comey memo

But he made clear it was not his intention for President Donald Trump and other White House officials to use the document to justify firing Comey, which is what they have done.

The account from Rosenstein also agrees with Trump's statements that the president had made a decision to fire Comey before he wrote the memo that the administration used to explain his firing. "I stand by it", Rosenstein's statement said. Reports surfaced soon after Comey was sacked that he had asked the Justice Department for additional resources for the probe, but Rosenstein on Friday pushed back against those claims. That was two days after Rosenstein named former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to investigate possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election.

"I believe that's why the deputy attorney general went out and wrote his very, very strong letter", Trump said. "I believe it. I stand by it".

In a news conference with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, Mr Trump was asked if he ever asked the then FBI director James Comey to drop the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The New York Times said the document, which was based on notes taken from inside the Oval Office and has been circulated as the official account of the meeting, was read to the newspaper by a us official.

Rosenstein, who met behind closed doors with House members on Friday and senators on Thursday, has named Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, as special counsel under his authority to oversee the investigation of Russian meddling in last year's election and whether anyone close to Trump colluded in it. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the probe.

Kawhi Leonard talks about ankle injury, questionable for Spurs-Warriors Game 3
With Saturday nearly here, the Warriors and Spurs have gotten plenty of rest while the Eastern Conference Finals catch up. After Game 2 , Spurs' coach Gregg Popovich said he didn't think the Spurs believed they could win without Leonard.

The appointment of Mueller as special counsel has drawn generally favorable comments from Democrats and from some Republicans as well.

On October 28, Comey sent a letter to Congress announcing he would revisit the investigation. I completely disagree. He again usurped the authority of the Department of Justice, by sending the letter over the objection of the Department of Justice; flouted rules and deeply engrained traditions; and guaranteed that some people would accuse the Federal Bureau of Investigation of interfering in the election. Lee Zeldin (R., N.Y.) sought to clarify whether Mr. Comey was sacked shortly after asking for additional resources for the Russian Federation investigation, as reported by multiple news outlets.

Trump, combative and complaining, fell short Thursday in trying to resolve investigations into his campaign and his first four months in office. "I also expect that Director Comey will be able to shed light on issues critical to this Committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election", Warner said.

"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama administration, there was never a special counsel appointed" he said, having misspelled counsel in a previous tweet which was quickly deleted.

"We'll get rid of the smoke and see where the actual issues lie", said Sen.
