After Soundgarden and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell's death was announced yesterday, attention has turned to footage uploaded to YouTube of his final performance in Detroit.

Police said they were investigating a possible suicide after his death on Wednesday, just hours after Soundgarden played a gig in the city. "A full autopsy report has not yet been completed", the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement after conducting an initial autopsy.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of musician Chris Cornell as a suicide, saying he was hanged.

Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Cornell's representative, Brian Bumbery, says that Cornell's suicide was "sudden and unexpected" and that his wife and family are in shock.

Cornell was a leader of the grunge movement with Seattle-based Soundgarden - with whom he gained critical and commercial acclaim - but also found success outside the band with other projects, including Audioslave, Temple of the Dog as well as solo albums. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

"When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive and he had passed away".

"Black Hole Sun will live on as a classic, and his is a true legacy of rock and roll".

Led Zeppelin singer Jimmy Page led tributes on Thursday to Cornell, calling him on Twitter "Incredibly Talented, Incredibly Young, Incredibly Missed".

Singer-songwriter Billy Idol tweeted: "Sad to hear of Chris Cornell passing, great singer and artist ... another blow ..."

Soundgarden reunited in 2012.

Cornell told The West Australian in late 2015: "There is a difference when you're writing an album that's completely stripped down, where the emotional connection to the singer is the most important thing".
