On track to start Game 1

The goal gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead over the Senators, a score that would stick the rest of the way as the Penguins defeated the Senators Monday at PPG Paints Arena to even up the Eastern Conference Finals at 1-1.

A third-period goal from Phil Kessel lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins to a series-levelling 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League playoffs. Not always, but a lot of the time, the Ottawa Senators play a style of hockey that is really tedious to watch.

Up next: The series shifts to Ottawa for two games, starting with Game 3 at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. They proved time and time again during the regular season that they can rebound after a loss, and the push-back mentality has been prevalent again in these playoffs. Craig Anderson made 27 saves.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - James Neal scored 9:24 into overtime, and Nashville kicked off its first appearance in the Western Conference finals with a victory over Anaheim.

Ryan came out of a tangle along the right-wing boards for a short breakaway and roofed a shot past goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. It was capitalizing on them that caused the problem.

Their most formidable offensive weapon is a ... defenceman.

1 shot and killed in domestic incident involving off-duty DE trooper
Neighbors said the trooper is a great person, in her 40s, with two high school-age kids who were not believed to be home. A domestic shooting involving an off-duty state trooper in DE has left one man shot and the trooper "severely battered".

Although playoff points leader Evgeni Malkin scored, fellow centre and Rocket Richard Trophy victor Sidney Crosby was held to two shots - and no other shot attempts - and post-season goals leader Jake Guetzel, one of Crosby's linemates, had one shot.

Pittsburgh had 5:50 of power-play time in the first period, including 45 seconds of five-on-three play.

Pittsburgh, already playing without winger Patric Hornqvist after he left warm-ups early, was undermanned most of the game after it lost two players to injuries in the first period.

The Senators focused not on creating extended pressure on Fleury but instead taking advantage of Pittsburgh's mistakes. Inexplicably, Dumoulin put the puck on Ryan's stick behind the Penguins net and Ryan made him pay, making a brilliant behind-the-back pass to Pageau in the slot. He also came-up just short of gaining control of the puck on the play that led to the overtime game-winner. Crosby, who has 14 points, does the same for the Penguins. Now Fleury is the main reason the Penguins are three wins from a return trip to the Cup finals. He noted, though, Ottawa did a good job limiting Pittsburgh chances at even strength which is why Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel were non-factors. It remained 1-0 until Evgeni Malkin beat Craig Anderson with 5:35 left in regulation. It also lifted Malkin past Jaromir Jagr into third place on Pittsburgh's all-time playoff points list with 148. Alex Burrows was quick to pounce on the puck and shove it past Fleury, with replays showing the puck eventually found its way into the goal. The call was upheld upon review. Neither Rust nor Schultz returned for the second period. Daniel Alfredsson scored 14 while leading Ottawa to the Cup finals in 2007. The Senators scratched F Viktor Stalberg, who Boucher said is "day to day" with an undisclosed injury.

The Penguins will likely start the series without defenseman Trevor Daley (lower body). "When you get in there, you look for some kind of move".
