Trump sought to discount FBI probe

According to the report, Trump asked Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers to publicly deny that there is any evidence of connections between Trump's team and Russian Federation.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats prepares to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, May 23, 2017, before the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on worldwide threats. Trump's requests to the intelligence officials came after that, according to the Post.

According to the story, Director Rogers tried to explain why he couldn't do that. Not only are national security agencies supposed to be insulated from partisan politics, but Trump appeared to be asking Rogers to both comment on an ongoing investigation and say something that Rogers couldn't know was true.

"I just fired the head of the FBI He was insane, a real nut job", Mr Trump said, according to a document detailing the Russian visit.

The report comes almost a week after it was reported that Comey kept a memo about how Trump asked him to cease his investigation into Michael Flynn. Officials said such memos could be made available to both the special counsel now overseeing the Russian Federation investigation and congressional investigators, who might explore whether Trump sought to impede the FBI's work. So that would make at least two memos out there, waiting to be subpoenaed, that show the President making inappropriate calls for what amounts to political help.

The New York Times reported last Friday that Trump talked to Lavrov at the White House the day after he made a decision to fire Comey.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a member of the committee, said he wants to press Comey as to whether he ever believed the White House was interfering with his work, in light of a spate of news reports that Comey had kept detailed records of his interactions with Trump.

He added: "People will think can we keep it going because people questioned us every single week this season". If nothing happens that's suitable for us, the situation will go on and he will carry on playing.

McMaster criticized sources who told reporters that Trump had disclosed highly classified information to the Russian officials in the meeting about a planned Islamic State operation.

Comey is set to testify in front of the Senate committee next week.

The FBI director, whom Trump fired two weeks ago, wrote a memo about the conversation, which included the President's suggestion that Comey should back off the investigation into Flynn, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The Washington Post, which first reported Trump's request Monday evening, says Trump's conversation with Rogers was documented in an internal memo written by a senior NSA official.

"Specifically, the committee has obtained a report of investigation dated March 14, 2016, showing that general Flynn told security clearance investigators that he was paid "by U.S. companies" when he traveled to Moscow in December 2015 to dine at a gala with Russian president Vladimir Putin", the letter continued. A White House official told the Post that the administration had no comment at the time. If so, what did Trump say?

Trump first asked Comey to drop the investigation.
