How the war-of-words between Trump and Pope Francis has evolved

Ivanka Trump plans to meet with human trafficking victims in Rome.

On Tuesday evening, Trump arrived in Italy from Israel.

We don't know what Trump and the pope said to each other in private, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

After meeting the pope, Trump went downstairs to meet Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican foreign minister.

On Wednesday morning, the USA president will visit Vatican City and engage in talks with the Pope and local officials, including Holy See Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

"Pope Francis' political and pastoral priorities do not line up easily with those of the Republican Party in general and Trump in particular", said the Rev. James Bretzke, a professor at Boston College.

Pope Francis also gave the president a copy of his message for World Peace Day 2017 and told him, "I signed it personally for you".

Melania giggled and said "Pizza?" When he traveled in Saudi Arabia, caterers ensured that his favorite meal - steak with a side of ketchup - would be offered alongside the traditional local cuisine.

Trump presented Francis with the books after a private meeting at the Vatican Wednesday. A piece of granite from the Martin Luther King. Jr. Named "Rising Above", the White House says it "represents hope for a peaceful tomorrow".

And even the pontiff's congratulatory message sent to mark Trump's inauguration contained a sly reference to their disagreement, as the pope wrote that he hoped the United States' worldwide stature would "continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need". The two men were to be left alone with a translator to hold a private discussion before emerging again to exchange gifts and farewells.

Pope Francis gave Trump a split medallion held together by an olive tree, which his interpreter told Trump is "a symbol of peace".

And he could react to events this week, including the release of Trump's budget, which would dramatically cut funding to programs that help the poor, and the president's agreement to sell military equipment to Saudi Arabia, .

Despite the gulf separating them in terms of personality and policies, Pope Francis insists he has an open mind. Climate change activists projected the words "Planet Earth First" on the massive dome of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on Tuesday night as Trump arrived in Rome. At right a Carabinieri paramilitary police officer salutes.

Mark Meadows , R-N.C., who chairs the Freedom Caucus, also had not read the article as he left a Monday evening vote. Sergey Kislyak "code-word information" related to an Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) plot.

On the eve of the pope's meeting with Trump, Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro, editor of an influential Italian Jesuit journal, noted that the differences between the two were drawing a lot of attention.

The two leaders differ greatly in their views on immigration and climate change. When the men exchanged gifts, the Pope smiled more broadly and easily.

Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, had a private audience with Francis at the Vatican in 2014 that lasted 50 minutes. Some of the main themes contained in them contrast sharply with President Donald Trump's policies and campaign promises, particularly concerning approaches to the environment and income inequality. I think you will enjoy them.

Pope Francis is meeting first lady Melania Trump, Trump's oldest daughter Ivanka, and other members of the US delegation.

Francis also shook hands with other members of the president's team, including former bodyguard Keith Schiller and social media director Dan Scavino.

With his poll numbers at a record low for a new president, Trump may be hoping for a boost after rubbing shoulders with the man who made the cover of Time and Rolling Stone and is credited with bringing many American Catholics back to the Church.

Trump greeted Francis in Sala del Tronetto, the room of the little throne, on the second floor of Apostolic Palace Wednesday morning.

MASSIMO FRANCO, Corriere della Sera: This meeting is more important for Trump than for the pope, because Trump presently is very weak internally, so he needs a more global reach.

Prior to the handshake, Trump walked toward the Saint Ambrose room, led by Gentlemen of his Holiness, which is a sort of honor guard of nobility. US President Donald Trump met Pope Francis at the Vatican today in a keenly-anticipated first face-to-face encounter between two world leaders who have clashed repeatedly on several issues. The meeting comes midway through his 9-day worldwide trip.

The two collided head-on early past year, when Francis was sharply critical of Trump's campaign pledge to build an impenetrable wall on the Mexican border and his declaration that the United States should turn away Muslim immigrants and refugees.

Trump, midway through his grueling nine-day maiden worldwide journey, called upon the pontiff at the Vatican early Wednesday where the two had a private 30-minute meeting laden with religious symbolism and ancient protocol.

Jiulia Demcoviks, 19, bubbled with enthusiasm at the prospect of seeing the pope and said that she hoped this meeting remind United States citizens that "we are very fortunate and that we have the power to help those who can't help themselves and we need to utilize that more instead of shying away from it and just help our own people". But it could provide powerful imagery to Catholic voters back in the United States as well as the possibility for conflict between a president and a pope who have not often seen eye-to-eye.

CNN reports that past year after a mass at the Mexican border, Pope Francis said that anybody who would rather build barriers instead of bridges are "not Christian".
