Islamic State supporters celebrate Manchester attack online

The Independent has reported Chief Constable of the Greater Manchester Police, Ian Hopkins, saying that investigators believe the attack was the act of a sole perpetrator, using a homemade bomb.

The threat level has only twice before been raised to critical since the system of official threat levels was introduced in 1 August 2006.

Soldiers will now be deployed at public events and police officers responsible for guarding key sites will be replaced by armed military officers.

The change indicates that another attack may be imminent.

Twenty two people have been killed and dozens injured in Britain's deadliest terror attack in over a decade after a suspected suicide bomber targeted fans leaving a concert of U.S. singer Ariana Grande in Manchester.

The move comes as investigators continue to try and figure out if Abedi acted alone on Monday night, when he blew himself up inside Manchester Arena - killing 22 people and wounding scores more.

May and police said the bomber died in the attack - something that went unmentioned in Islamic State's claim of responsibility, which gave no name for the attacker.

The attack, which was carried out by one man who detonated an improvised explosive device at approximately 10.35pm, killed 22 people - including children - and injured 59 more.

Panicked spectators fled the arena after what several concertgoers described as a huge explosion after Grande's last song.

Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham said: "My heart goes out to families who have lost loved ones, my admiration to our fearless emergency services".

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The attack at Manchester Arena - Europe's largest indoor arena - during the concert of Ariana Grande was claimed by the Islamic State group today. More than 50 people were wounded.

The U.N. Security Council condemned "the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attack" and expressed solidarity with Britain in the fight against terrorism.

Police said: "Emergency services are now responding to reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena".

Tributes were also paid to 26-year-old John Atkinson from Bury, who was named by friends on Facebook as an apparent victim. Chris Upton, of Tarleton Community Primary School, said: "Saffie was simply a attractive little girl in every aspect of the word".

'We struggle to comprehend the warped and twisted mind that sees a room packed with young children not as a scene to cherish but an opportunity for carnage, ' she added.

Or is London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, right when he says that terrorism is just "part and parcel" of life in the big city?
