Rosenstein: I Knew Comey Would Be Fired

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official. Sources told the Post that the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks.

Across town, Rosenstein was briefing the Senate about his decision to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the independent Trump-Russia probe. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump is quoted as saying, according to the document.

Wittes, who was raised Jewish and attended religious day school, dished about Comey's discomfort with Trump's attempts to court him and pressure him into shutting down investigations into ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation. President Donald Trump "sought my advice and input", he said. Trump himself had already contradicted that explanation, telling interviewers earlier that he had already made a decision to dismiss Comey.

He drew applause from most of the members in the room when he said the investigation into alleged Russian interference should be bipartisan. He had been in contact with former Trump adviser Carter Page, though Page has said he shared only "basic immaterial information and publicly available research documents" with the Russian.

The White House used Rosenstein's three-page memo as rationale to fire Comey.

House oversight committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz announced a hearing next week and invited Comey to testify, but he did so before making contact with Comey, and it's unlikely the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director plans to attend.

"I stand by it", the deputy attorney general said.

Earlier this week, NPR confirmed that Trump had asked Comey to scuttle the investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, according to a memo of the account written by Comey.

Although White House officials said last week that Trump had not been in contact with Flynn following his dismissal, the sources speaking to the Beast suggested that communication between the pair was ongoing.

"The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it", Spicer said, adding that the real story was the leaks of "private and highly classified conversations". This means he has wide latitude to investigate anything having to do with Russia's meddling in the elections, including whether or not Trump's campaign has ties to Russian Federation, and whether or not Trump obstructed justice when he fired Comey.

Cleaver said Rosenstein told House members " this is not a partisan investigation, this is about Russian Federation involvement in our democracy".
