US, Europe Face Divisions Over Iran Policy

Tehran denies these allegations.

Iranians yearning for detente overseas and greater freedoms at home have handed President Hassan Rouhani a second term, but the hard-line forces he defeated in elections Friday will remain defiantly opposed to his plans.

Speaking Saturday in Saudi Arabia, Tillerson said President Hassan Rouhani now has the opportunity to end Iran's role in supporting "destabilizing forces that exist in this region".

"We hope that if Rouhani wanted to change Iran's relationship with the rest of the world, those are the things he could do", US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in Riyadh, where he was accompanying Mr Trump.

Mr Trump's administration is likely to keep putting pressure on Iran over its weapons programmes, as well as what it sees as Teheran's efforts to destabilise the Middle East, said former United States officials and analysts.

Kuwait's emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, an ally of Saudi Arabia, congratulated Rouhani on his re-election.

On Saturday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, at a news conference with his USA counterpart Rex Tillerson in Riyadh, said Iran's presidential election was an internal matter. The Gulf Arab state a year ago downgraded ties with Tehran after Saudi Arabia severed ties with Tehran after demonstrators angry at the execution of a Shi'ite Muslim cleric in the kingdom attacked Saudi missions.
