Crafty Mkhitaryan Finish Doubles United's Europa League Final Lead

Players from Ajax and Manchester United observed a minute of reflection prior to Wednesday's Europa League final in memory of the victims of Monday's terror attack in Manchester.

United's triumph followed success in the League Cup and the Community Shield in Jose Mourinho's first season in charge at Old Trafford with Champions League football secured after United could only manage a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, arguably United's poorest performer in a drab first-half, was the goalscorer, brilliantly hooking the ball into the net as he reacted quickest to a downward header by Chris Smalling.

The winger was similarly influential in Dortmund's run to the quarter-finals of the competition last season, netting seven times in 15 matches - only four goals less than he managed in the Bundesliga in double the number of matches.

Manchester United won the EFL Cup trophy back in February thanks to a 3-2 win against Southampton at Wembley.

And with two minutes played of the second half, they were hit by a United sucker punch.

"I knew people who were at the concert, so it's not easy, it's not a nice moment - not just for Manchester but for the whole of England, and we all felt that".

The English side then took their foot off the pedal, enabling Ajax to start finding space in unsafe areas, but within three minutes of kick-off in the second half they had tightened their grip on the game. To the victor of Wednesday's one-off goes an automatic place in next season's Champions League group stage.

It was United who settled quickest, Marcus Rashford causing some early problems for the young Ajax back line and Marouane Fellaini nearly reaching a fizzing cross from Juan Mata.

Real Madrid completed the lineup of Champion League seeds on Sunday when they wrapped up La Liga. They delivered when it mattered most.
