On the Syrian border, Haley confronts civil war's reality

President Trump's United Nations envoy set foot Wednesday in the no man's land between Syria and Turkey, witnessing the precarious transfer of aid supplies into a seemingly interminable conflict.

From the Syrian side of the border zone, Ambassador Nikki Haley gazed up at a Turkish flag plastered onto signs marking the entrance into that nation's territory.

The budget proposal comes the day after Haley visited a UNICEF center providing emotional support for Syrian refugee children and asked how the US could better help.

"Today we visited a health center that trains Syrian doctors and nurses to practice medicine in Turkey, helping their fellow refugees. This innovative Turkish/UN partnership also provides healthcare and counseling services for Syrians who have escaped conflict zones", Haley wrote on Twitter. The State Department budget's reduction amounts to 31 percent or $37.6 billion.

The Syrian war, which has now entered its seventh year, has displaced millions internally along with hundreds of thousands fleeing to the neighbouring states.

To that end, Haley and other USA officials have encouraged Syria's neighbors, who've absorbed the majority of the millions of refugees, to treat them less like visitors and more like locals, living, working and studying among the regular population.

Many members of congress were critical of Trump's overseas platitudes and increased defense spending amid the slashes in overseas aid spending. "It's just so totally destructive".
