Pope asks Trump to be peacemaker, gives him environmental letter

The Trumps and the Pope traded gifts after the Papal audience. "We did have a good exchange on the climate change issue".

The First Lady was meeting the pontiff in the vatican with Donald Trump when he politely inquired: "What are you feeding him, potica?". Trump has said climate change might be a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese.

Areas of convergence such as respect for life and religious freedom were stressed, as well as those issues of divergence such as immigration, although the statement did not refer to the environment, also an area where the Pope and Trump have differed.

"We had a fantastic meeting", the president said afterward.

Asked how the meeting with the pope went, Mr Trump said: "Great". The two men (from two very different backgrounds) shook hands and sat down for their very first face-to-face meeting.

Included in these three writings is Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical "Laudato Si", in which he calls for global action to combat climate change.

While Trump flashed a wide grin, the Pope offered only a modest smile - his demeanor, business-like.

"We always saw press conferences as part of our objective: to send the message in countries without a free press, or with limitations on freedom of speech that the United States valued these sometimes-unpredictable interactions as a part of democracy", Psaki said. During the presidential campaign, the Pope - who is revered for his deep humility and honest affinity for the poor and downtrodden - was cutting about Trump's plan to build a border wall with Mexico. "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they might be, and not building bridges, is not Christian", he said.

It is hard to think of two more contrasting characters than Pope Francis and President Trump.

There was never an apology in either direction. They spoke of together being "engaged in service to the people in the fields of healthcare, education, and assistance to immigrants".

Pat Roberts of Kansas, who chairs the Agriculture Committee in the Senate, said cuts to crop-insurance were a no-go. The house of cards is built on the assumption the economy will grow by 3 percent over the next decade.

As the two men allowed the cameras back into the room as their first in-person encounter wrapped on Tuesday, the mood appeared to have lightened.

The Sant'Egidio Community is often praised by Pope Francis for their work, in particular for the projects they lead aimed at helping the poor and refugees.

"No president has ever visited the homelands and holy sites of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslims faiths all on one trip", said US National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster.

Pope Francis: "What do you give him to eat?"

Upon completing their meeting, the pope gave the president a medal featuring an olive branch, a symbol of peace, among other gifts.

President Trump continued his nine-day foreign trip at the Vatican where he was welcomed by the Swiss Guard and then taken to meet the Pope.

To say I was raised Catholic would be an understatement.

US First Lady Melania Trump (C) sits with children during a visit to the Pediatric Hospital Bambin Gesù, on May 24, 2017 in Rome. The ladies wore long sleeve black dresses and veils to stick to protocol, despite opting out of wearing head scarves during their visit to Saudi Arabia earlier in the week. "She was rather elegantly dressed, and totally in keeping with the event", said BBC's David Willey.

NPR reports the meeting lasted about 30 minutes with Pope Francis, Trump, his wife, Melania, daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner.
