Trump praises Duterte for an 'unbelievable job' on drug issue

Martial law in the Philippines is restricted to 60 days - though Duterte, who has been accused of crimes against humanity for alleged extrajudicial killings, alarmed many observers by saying his use of martial law would be similar to that of the Philippines' longtime dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

When Marcos declared martial law in 1972, ushering in more than a decade of violent dictatorship, the United States was fighting the Cold War, not terrorism. Many people were also killed by vigilantes, and children have been caught in the crossfire.

The Muslim extremists sought reinforcement from the ISIS-inspired allied terrorist group Maute, and together they stormed Marawi, a largely Muslim city of more than 200,000 people.

Marawi is situated about 800km (500 miles) south of the Philippine capital Manila.
