Package that led to Newark airport evacuation deemed safe

Authorities are evacuating part of Newark Liberty Airport Saturday after cops discovered a suspicious pressure cooker, a law enforcement source said.

Newark Airport says the package has been cleared, but passengers should expect delays.

There have been multiple media reports of a suspicious pressure cooker prompting an evacuation of the airport at about 4:45 p.m.

The item was found at Terminal A on level 3, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 NY that it was found in an area before passengers are screened.

A Port Authority police officer looked into the bag and saw that it "looked like a pressure cooker", the source said.

Essex County's bomb squad had responded the to call and the device was cleared. K-9 units and local police were also on the scene.

The terminal was evacuated at about 5 p.m. on the first day of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
