Federal Bureau of Investigation probes Kushner-Russia meetings; more documents sought

Comey was sacked by Trump last month over mishandling of Hillary Clinton email scandal.

The Washington Post reports that Russia's ambassador to the US has told his superiors that he and Jared Kushner discussed setting up a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin in December.

The Post story cites anonymous "people familiar with the investigation", who say the FBI investigation does not mean that Kushner is suspected of a crime.

The White House in March confirmed that Kushner and the ousted national security adviser, Michael Flynn, met with Kislyak at Trump Tower in December.

The Washington Post reports that the FBI is investigating meetings that President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had in December with Russian officials.

"In light of this development and other considerations we are undertaking appropriate consultation to ensure all relevant interest implicated by your request are properly evaluated", the FBI's assistant director for congressional affairs wrote.

Another Comey memo, reported last week by the Times, shows President Donald Trump met privately with the FBI director on February 14 and asked him to end his investigation of Flynn, whose own contacts with Russian Federation had prompted the acting attorney general to warn the White House he had been compromised.

Trump fired Comey May 9 amid questions about the FBI's investigation, which is now being overseen by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director.

Chaffetz included another request for materials related to Comey and communications with the White House and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with a deadline of June 8.

"The focus of the Committee's investigation is the independence of the FBI", Chaffetz wrote Thursday in a letter to acting FBI Director Andrew G. McCabe.

The FBI didn't completely rule out handing over the documents but said it was still reviewing Chaffetz's request in light of the Justice Department appointing a special counsel to investigate potential Russian collusion with the Trump campaign.

He added, in a thinly veiled threat, "I trust and hope you understand this and make the right decision - to produce these documents to the committee immediately and on a voluntary basis".

Comey is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in an open, public hearing sometime after Memorial Day.
