Victims thank heroes killed in racist stabbing in Portland


He writes, "They were fearless Americans who died at the hands of someone who, when all the facts are collected, we may have every right to call a terrorist".

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes, has noted a sharp rise in the number of both anti-Muslim groups and bias incidents in the past year. Another who stepped in was seriously injured.

On Monday, President Trump weighed in, lauding the victims and deploring the act of violence.

Trump tweeted Monday: "The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable".

He says he hopes their actions inspire "changes in the political dialogue in this country" and that people put aside their hate and honor the victims. "Our prayers are w/ them", Trump tweeted from the official @POTUS account.

"He was just being really belligerent and loud, " she told The Oregonian newspaper.

Portland Police confirmed to KOIN 6 News there was some sort of altercation even before he got on the train. "Then they just all started arguing", Destinee said.

By the time the light rail pulled into the next station, Mangum and her friends were ready to leave.

Wheeler said the three men who intervened on the train Friday were willing to give their lives to stand up for people they didn't know.

"And then we turned around while they were fighting, and he just started stabbing people, and it was just blood everywhere, and we just started running for our lives", Mangum said. "But what a President says, who he has around him, and the tone he sets can set the tone for the nation at large".

According to NPR, the FBI is investigating but they "say it's too soon to label this an act of domestic terrorism".

Taliesin Meche, a 23-year-old economics graduate who had just started a job as an environmental consultant, was pronounced dead at hospital.

Injured in the attack was 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, a student at Portland State University.

Mangum's mother, Dyjuana Hudson, said she owes everything to the three men and their grieving families.

The girl has a simple message for the two heroes - "thank you".

"I just kept telling him, 'You're not alone".

Mayor Ted Wheeler said Best was an Army veteran and a city employee.

"They were attacked viciously", said Simpson.

Police identified the suspect as Jeremy Joseph Christian, who has already been booked on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of second-degree intimidation, and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police said detectives are looking at Christian's background, "including the information publicly available about the suspect's extremist ideology". At one point, he threatens to stab the driver of the train.

The FBI has joined the Portland police-led investigation to gather evidence. "They are mourned by millions more who are also deeply anxious about what might come next". "I couldn't imagine what you're going through right now as far as losing someone and I'm sorry it had to be at the hands of my children", Hudson said. At the same time, she believes the Portland stabbing suspect wanted a reaction for what he was saying out loud.

Police have not spoken to the women who were the focus of his tirade, who left the scene following the chaos of the stabbings.
